Umisachi and Yamasachi (The Tale of the Fisherman and the Hunter)
Once upon a time, there were two brothers. The older brother, Umisachi, was a fisherman who lived by the sea. The younger brother, Yamasachi, was a hunter who lived in the mountains. One day, Yamasachi asked his brother if they could trade their tools for a while so he could try fishing, and Umisachi agreed.
Yamasachi took Umisachi’s fishing rod and went to the sea, but he was not good at fishing and soon lost the hook. He felt very bad about it and told his brother what happened. Umisachi was upset because the hook was very important to him. Yamasachi promised to find the lost hook, so he searched everywhere but could not find it.
Desperate, Yamasachi went to the shore and cried. Suddenly, the Sea God’s daughter appeared and asked why he was so sad. Yamasachi explained his problem, and she decided to help him. She took him to the Sea God’s palace under the sea.
In the palace, the Sea God welcomed Yamasachi and promised to help him find the hook. While staying there, Yamasachi and the Sea God’s daughter fell in love and got married. The Sea God eventually found the lost hook and gave it back to Yamasachi.
Yamasachi returned to his village with the hook and many treasures given to him by the Sea God. He gave the hook back to Umisachi and shared the treasures with his brother. However, Umisachi was still jealous and plotted against Yamasachi.
The Sea God’s daughter, knowing of the danger, gave Yamasachi a magic tide-controlling jewel to protect him. When Umisachi tried to harm Yamasachi, Yamasachi used the jewel to create a tide that nearly drowned his brother. Umisachi begged for mercy, and Yamasachi saved him, forgiving him for his jealousy.
In the end, the brothers made peace. Yamasachi continued to live happily with the Sea God’s daughter, and they had many children, founding a long line of rulers.
This story teaches us about the importance of family, forgiveness, and the power of love and kindness.
